Many citizens of Charleston proudly fly the U.S. Flag at their homes and places of work, but what do you do with it when it’s old and ratty and you’re ready for a new one? Don’t just throw it in the trash like any old item… that’s considered disrespectful. There are proper methods of etiquette and respect for displaying ‘Old Glory’ and so there is also proper respect for disposing of flags, in a dignified manner. Charleston has a ‘flag burning pit’ on the property of Knights of Columbus, built by Eagle Scouts. 303 Events is planning a retirement day ceremony on our nations ‘Flag Day’, June 14th. Find below an outline for the ceremony. We invite you to plan for this ceremony, and should you have a flag to retire, please contact the number below that we might receive that flag in advance of that day… placing it into a secure place, including it into the ceremony. Flag Retirement Ceremony @ 303 S.Sixth Street, Charleton, Mo. 63834 5pm – dedication of the fire pit by the Goodin Family 5:30 – Meal available, by D3S (burgers, dogs, and fixens’, free will offering 6:59 - Bugler Calls “To the Colors”; those in attendance assemble in two lines, facing each other, allowing procession to march between. Respectful Silence expected. 7pm – Procession of Color Guard, and flags to be retired. Presentation of flags to Sergeant at Arms for this event.

ATTENTION CHARLESTON RESIDENTS: This flyer was mailed out with water bills back in December. We are aware that the dates specified state that the collection would take place from October-December, but the company got a late start and it is taking longer than anticipated. Horner & Shifrin Engineering is contracted through the city to perform the lead survey. This was mandated to be done by the state of Missouri. It is required that they check every single residence and business. This is a long process and this is only the first phase. We kindly ask for your cooperation throughout this process. The individuals going house to house will be wearing reflective vests and will have copies of the flyer. If you would like to schedule a time for them to come to your house, please call 618-726-0319.
